Physics and Solver

NB! Read all Help text for "Solver options".

  • Set number of iterations to a suitable value. The number of iterations needed varies depending on the specific case. However, as a general rule, 1000 to 3000 iterations are often, but not always, sufficient in IDA ICE CFD, depending on the complexity and mesh size of the case. Fewer than 500 iterations will never produce a meaningful result.
  • Click "Solver options" and please press F1 and read the Wiki Help text (or use link above). Look at the options, there are different choices for:
    • Solve for CO2
      • This option must be enabled to include CO2 emission inputs in the CFD simulation.
    • Turbulence model
      • EQUA does not reccomend which turbulence model to use, but if you are unsure, keep the default.
    • Momentum predictor
      • Per default the momentum predictor is disabled, since for buoyancy driven flows this is usually more robust.
    • Transient solver
      • This is an experimental feature and should be used with caution.

Radiation not included in IDA ICE CFD simulations

There is no model for thermal radiation in IDA ICE CFD. Instead, radiation heat affects the surface temperatures that serve as boundary conditions for the CFD simulation.

Create your case

  • One CFD case equals one mesh.
  • Create a CFD case (bottom left) - button "Create".
  • Right-click the case and choose "Mesh only" if you only want to generate a mesh and then inspect the mesh. This will not start a simulation.

Run the simulation

Select your case in the right table and press button "Run".

Number of processor cores used

The number of processor cores used in a CFD simulation is the minimum value of:

  • Number of parallel processes to start.
Entered here: Options → Preferences... → General → Simulation
  • Number of actual physical cores.

The Introduction Exercise - Physics and Solver

  • Set "Iterations" to 1500.

  • Left-cklick button "Create" in the left bottom corner.
  • Name the case as you wish.
    • Right-click the case in the right table, and select Rename.
  • It is good practice to annotate the case with some information regarding simulation and mesh settings.
    • Right-click the case in the cfd case table, and select Annotate.

Running the CFD case

  • Press button "Run".
    • This will first create the mesh and then in an automatic sequence simulate the CFD.
    • The case will now iterate and simulate according to your input.

  • The current iteration is displayed in the top right corner. When 1500 iterations are done the simulation is finished.
