BPS tasks within the design and operation process

Construction and Comissioning

This is where the detailed execution planning, the tenders, the awarding of contracts, as well as the actual execution and its coordination and management, take place. The final goal is an up and running building with satisfied occupants, corrected deficiencies and paid final invoices.

During construction, there is nothing to do for the BPS engineer. But that would mean that he would be all the more in demand during the commissioning. Unfortunately, it happens in practically every construction project that it only becomes clear during commissioning how certain subsystems are controlled and whether they interact optimally. Even if, in an ideal world, the control system was programmed according to the specifications from the planning and, in particular, from the BPS, in reality it is almost always the other way around: When the building is put into operation, the details of how it should actually function according to the planning are forgotten. The control system is therefore manually adjusted until no more complaints are received from the building users. If the BPS engineer still has a job to do at all during commissioning, the most he can hope to achieve is to try to understand all the control systems and their programming and to replicate them in the simulation model in order to quantify the effect of the incorrect programming on the original targets. This is easier in the case of measurable and deviating operating variables such as ventilation volume flows than with non-transparent programmable PLC systems.
