Why do BPS?
Optimize building performance
Perhaps the most useful application of BPS is to use it as a design tool that helps to make good decisions - decisions that lead to improved performance in terms of energy efficiency and occupant satisfaction.
During the design process, the BPS expert can define design variants within the planning options available in the current project phase. Such variants can be compared on an equal level or structured in cascades in which meaningful combinations of variants can be analyzed, when e.g. a certain variant can only be considered in combination with another.
An even much more powerful method can be to describe an almost infinite number of possible combinations of all possible planning options and, with the help of great computing power, to find the optimum combinations. Thanks to modern optimization algorithms, this can even be done with many and sometimes conflicting target functions.
In an optimization process, it is important that all involved trades are taken into account, such as building physics, façade design, HVAC design and building automation. This is why the BPS expert is playing an increasingly central role within the planning team today.
Optimization is carried out under previously specified target functions that include investment or life cycle economic and ecological (nonrenewable primary energy and/or CO2) costs on one side and benefits in the form of comfort (as temperature, draught or daylight) on the other side.
