Trouble shooting the installation
It happens that an extension ends up in the wrong place (e.g. installs to the wrong IDA ICE installation) or that some parts are missing. Here we collect known installation issues.
First of all, turn on "Debug messages" from Main menu -> Options -> Preferences -> Developer.
Symptom: No CFD Tab
- Open the "About IDA" form from the Help meny and check that CFD is listed and that IDA ICE and CFD has the expected versions.
- Check your license.
- Uninstall and reinstall the CFD extension.
Symptom: CFD Tab exists, but error popups
When the CFD Tab is accessed the first time, IDA ICE calls python to perform some system checks related to WSL2. If you get one or more error popup windows like this one
then, there may be a problem with the python distribution that is embedded in IDA ICE CFD.
Check which python.exe that the extension tries to use
- Open the script dialog in IDA ICE Main menu-> Tools -> Run script and run the function (cfd-python-cmd "dummy") and read the output (see picture). The function should return a path, as marked in the picture below. Try to find this file on your file system.
- If the python.exe is not where indicated, then first consider if some Virus protection program may have quarentened it. The next thing is to re-install the CFD extension.
- If the python.exe is found where indicated, try to launch python (just double click on the exe file).
Check if IDA ICE can call python
Next, if python.exe is found and seems to work as expected, test if IDA ICE calls python correctly.
- In the Run script dialog again, run this function (wsl-status). If everything works, it should return the letter "T". Also take note of the debug messages.
